Chris Rock Comedy Special Will Be Netflix apos;s First Live Program

's upcoming comedy special will be the first live show as the streaming giant tries to drive up viewing figures. 
Last week, Netflix introduced the new 'Basic with Ads' plan, offering subscribers a $6.99 deal that features four to five minutes of ads per hour and a limited selection of shows. 
Netflix announced its newest venture on Thursday, saying that Rock's special will air live globally in early 2023.

This isn't the first time Rock has collaborated with the streaming giant, having had been on Netflix is a Joke and his 2018 special Tamborine. 
He also made headlines after being famously slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars following a GI Jane joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith. Fans have been begging the comedian to open up about the event that got Smith banned from the Academy for 10 years, which he only recently started to add into his comedy bits.

It's rivals, such as Amazon and Apple, have already begun to acquire sports streaming rights. Amazon's Prime Video also host Thursday Night Football, while Apple hosted Major League Baseball games last season. 
Netflix has suffered major losses this year, after experiencing a 63 percent market drop in April, shedding around $170billion in value.
It also lost nearly 1million subscribers by July. Netflix lost subscribers in the first two quarters this year, although it said it wasn't as big as expected.

In its second quarter earnings report on Tuesday, Netflix posted a loss of 970,000 global subscribers, versus the company's prior forecast of a loss of 2 million. 
Analysts who had anticipated the smaller subscriber losses pointed to the streamer's popular series Stranger Things, which released a new season in two parts -- one at the end of the second quarter, and one at the end of the third.
The staggered release strategy was widely seen as a means of preventing users from subscribing just to watch the show and quickly cancelling their membership.
